I see a lot of people on my TL getting upset over the whole Aoi & BL debacle and I’m just going to raise my hand for one little second :)
(I wasn’t going to say anything but.. everyone seems to torn up about it for various reasons and I felt compelled :D)
The context in which he’s saying this is in response to people bombarding him by sending him stories, questions, and art depicting him and other band mates in .. compromising .. positions. Being pummeled with such, at most times graphic, imagery can be daunting – especially when you swing the other way. Imagine you and your best friend, who is the same gender as you, and you both prefer the opposite sex as romantic candidates. Now, imagine yourself receiving constant images/etc of you and your friend having sex, making out, etc, etc, and invasive questions in regards to who bottoms/tops, etc. You have no problem with it when it happens once or twice – maybe you even chuckle a little and say ‘Ah, we had it coming because we’re so touchy-feely with each other’, yada yada. But, it keeps happening and it doesn’t seem to end. That is unsettling. And even if you’re completely fine with same-sex couples, the fact is, you don’t swing that way and seeing depictions of yourself and your friend having sex or whatever would be unwanted.
Aoi isn’t saying that BL in and of itself is gross (and I took the translation ‘gross’ in a tone more like ‘unsettling’ – an adverse reaction you would have if you saw yourself being shown in a way that wasn’t who you were) – he’s saying that seeing himself presented that way (and everyone constantly posting these things to him) is disturbing. And rightly so.
Fans need to remember that not everyone is open-minded and not everyone appreciates or can *tolerate* having such things sent to them. Aoi is already a man with a paper-thin temper. Plus, it comes off as disrespectful to send him those sorts of things, whether or not the person in question is gay. For instance, Neil Patrick Harris is an openly gay and married man. Would you ever think to send him art depicting him and his husband in the throes of ecstasy? No (at least, I *hope* that would be your answer…). That’s uncalled for, unwanted, and rude.
Now, this doesn’t mean everyone must *stop* writing or editing or drawing. It *does* mean to respect his wishes and not directly send him said forms of expression. I know many people on my TL feel guilty in continuing to create fanfics and the like, but if it is done in a respectful manner and you are aware that it is not so much people we’re writing/etc, but *characters*, then there is no problem. Everyone who is semi-famous knows that such things about them exist out there on the internet. It is only ever a problem if it becomes a constant presence through bombardment or harassment.
I think what those fans who were sending him everything need to realize is: what writers/artists produce is a *fantasy*. Social queues need to be taken note of in order for us to enjoy our little romps in BL-land and for Aoi to feel comfortable using social networking sites to connect to us.
If Aoi doesn’t want to see it? No problem. More for us :3
